A Leaf Floats By
November has come and gone in a flurry of crimson leaves, the bluest skies you have ever seen, and a few misty, rainy, cozy days in between. Autumn in California has proven to be splendidly beautiful. The fall colors really surprised me, as there were so many of them. The trees were swoon-worthy! And the vineyards all turned color too. Gold, red, and purple, depending on the variety of grapes grown. I am sad we only have one more autumn in California, for it was the autumn days that won me over. And now the leaves blanket the street-sides, the air has turned chilly, and Christmas lights are appearing on every corner.
We were invited to a stone soup supper in Princeton the other night. It was held in a cozy barn that fairly sparkled with candlelight and a cheery wood stove. The soup was cooked outside near big, warm bonfires, the stone soup story was read, cider was kept warm on the stove, and Chinese lanterns were sent to the stars. The evening was fun, scary, and cold. We are learning to know so many new, friendly, and wonderful people. I think it is rather good for me, although far from my comfort zone at times.
As some of you know, we made a trip home for my dear grandfather’s funeral. It was a very sorrowful time for my family, as we all had a very personal and special relationship with Grandpa. He was a big part of our lives and will be missed greatly. Amidst the sorrow, it was still good to be home and to unexpectedly get to see friends and family. Grandpa grew up in California, and here I am, many years later in his old stomping grounds. I wish he could come for a visit.
Highlights of November included an invite one beautiful fall Saturday to a brunch with Ballico young couples. Thanksgiving Day spent with Bennie and Sher Friesen, Bryce and Janae, Barry and Theresa, and the rest of the family. (Very kind of Bennie and Sher to invite us.) A boat ride and a short fishing trip with Kevin and Roxanne. (A couple from West Valley.) Kevin is a fishing guide, and they are living down here on the delta during the striper season. Having Vince and Moni, Jonny, and Abi here for two short days. We took them to San Francisco, Muir Woods, Muir Beach Overlook, and drove to the top of Mt. Diablo. It was so much fun showing Jonny all the cool things about California. He was so pumped and fascinated with every little detail.
And now we are preparing for all the Christmas festivities. I think December is going to be the best. Isn’t it always?
Ok, I forced myself to sit and write a few words to y’all, all the while my puzzle has been screaming my name, and my coffee has become cold. Yes, I have been puzzling like crazy. Thrifted puzzles have been a terrific way to pass long evenings.
Send me your Christmas letters. Thanks.
P.S. A shoutout to my amazing friend Vicki, who sewed me not one but TWO dresses for the holidays.
